Farewell to Oat Milk!

Have Learned Not to Put It in My Coffee Since Learning This

I couldn't image getting my morning caffeine any other way after I had my daily coffee boosted with oat milk. I don't eat a vegan diet or have a dairy intolerance; oat milk just tastes wonderful. My grocery aisles are flooded with plant-based milk substitutes, including my favorite oat milk substitute and others made from soy, coconut, almond, and hazelnuts, so I know I'm not alone. A staple of many cafés' menus, oatmeal drinks are now a must-have for many people's morning coffee on their way to work.

You may not be doing your health any favors if you enjoy oat milk lattes as much as I do. More specifically, there might be a cost associated with your blood sugar (https://apple.news/AcOxrFHqRRYy5PVB6XpbMkQ) levels. Blood sugar levels are something that doctors and nutritionists used to believe only diabetics needed to monitor closely, but it's becoming more and more obvious that changes in blood sugar can affect anyone's health and happiness. Hypoglycemia, or an unbalanced blood sugar level, can lead to a variety of symptoms, including cravings (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/14984802/), fatigue and lack of energy (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6372920/), acne (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4565837/), poor sleep (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7778470/), and mental fog (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3651610/). All milk, including cow's milk, contains sugar, though the exact amount varies depending on the source and production method. As stated by the Department of Agriculture.

The amount of sugar in one cup of unsweetened oat milk is 7.01 grams. The remaining milk varieties compare as follows: There are 11 grams of sugar in a cup of full cow's milk, 12 grams in a cup of 1 percent cow's milk, 2 grams in a cup of unsweetened almond milk, and 6 grams in a cup of coconut milk. The self-described "Glucose Goddess" (https://www.instagram.com/glucosegoddess/?hl=en), a French biologist Jessie Inchauspe explains, "We look at starch content as well as sugar content when determining if a food will spike our blood sugar levels because starch also turns into glucose during digestion."

There are a few things you can do to manage your blood sugar levels if you simply cannot bear to give up your favorite oat milk latte. "Go for a walk after drinking oat milk, or consider having breakfast first, instead of drinking oat milk on an empty stomach," suggests Inchauspé. After experimenting with a few different milk substitutes, unsweetened soy milk has emerged as my current preference; I now almost always use it in my coffee. I genuinely feel less hungry before lunch when I attempt to focus on this in the morning.
